Yoga 101?

In the last week, several people have asked me about a monthly class we offer, called Yoga 101. It is advertised as a class perfect for beginners. However, it’s really a great opportunity for “yogis” of all levels.
At the most basic level, the goal is to help people who are new to yoga feel comfortable entering classes. The course outlines everything from basic etiquette to how to do the most common asanas (poses).
It also covers some explanation of yoga philosophy and information about the different styles of yoga. In most classes, the pace of asanas doesn’t allow for exploration into the purposes or theories behind the practice. This class will shed some light on the why’s and how’s.
The added bonus of this class is that it’s a small group (max 8 students), so the teacher can spend time helping each student with their individual questions, concerns, modifications, etc.
The next class is this Saturday, November 5, with Martha Griffin.

How it All Began …

I own my own business, I’m the mother of a 4 year old boy, and I recently turned 41. I’ve been a die-hard Rallysport member for most of the past 20 years (!): I love classes like Group Power, Kendra’s Planet Motion, and yoga with Diane – and I’ve been hooked on Lisa Verbeck’s Booty Bootcamp class since I tried it more than two years ago. On top of that, I’ve always have some special, rotating, exercise-related hobby every few months – training for Bolder Boulder, sprint distance triathalons, seeing how fast I can run up and down Sanitas, etc.

I feel like I’m relatively fit, but I handle PRWeekly caliper measurements for restaurants, wineries and breweries, and there’s a lot of incredible food, and, well, “beverages” in my life. Plus, between my 4 year old and my own business, I’m almost always tired, so I tend to crave a sweet pick-me-up in the middle of the afternoon or late evening.

My bodyfat is 20.2%. It’s not so awful, but I feel pretty… squishy, and I’ve always been awed by, and jealous of, those lean Boulder bodies. And there’s definitely some ego going on here – I’ve basically lost and gained the same 5 lbs. over and over, ever since I lost the baby weight 2-3 years ago, and I’m sick and tired of feeling like I can’t be the “me I want to be.” If they can do it, why can’t I?? I mean, really is it truly unattainable for me, and if so, why??

Recently, I started lifting weights with Rallysport GM Erin Carson, who not only makes weightlifting fun and accessible, but is also incredibly smart, well-informed, and motivating. I whined to her about my seemingly insurmountable problem of the rotating 5 lbs., and she told me about BioSignature Modulation, a national program that is offered in more than 50 countries, including right here at Rallysport.

BioSignature was developed by a famous personal trainer, Charles Poliquin, who was flummoxed as to why his clients could get “ripped” all over, but still carry body fat in just one or two stubborn spots.

Thousands of tests later, he found that “where an individual stores their body fat is an indication of their hormonal profile, and that to lose weight (they) need to take specific steps to correct hormonal imbalances.” Awesome! Apparently, by measuring my body fat (with high tech calipers – in twelve places!) we can figure what is going on with me hormonally, and by working with my diet and nutrition, sleep, health and exercise, we can actually determine what I need to finally lose the body fat. Sounds simple, and yet sounds like it makes sense – I never believed in most of the popular diet mumbo-jumbo anyway. She arranged for me to meet with two ubersmart, superfit trainers, Jed Glass and Robert Cunningham, who offer the BioSignature program at Rallysport.

Jed and Rob meet with their clients on a weekly basis. You get weighed, and “pinched”, and you have a full half-hour to discuss all the areas of your life that might be having an affect on your body. It’s wonderfully supportive, and it makes so much sense to look at the body holistically like this. Of course, your sleep, exercise, diet, and hormones would all be interrelated, and should be examined and, well, “aligned” to work together. It was determined that Rob would be my coach, and finally, I was on the path that would help me reach my goals, after years and years of longing and frustration.

MONTH ONE

There were a number of things I had to get used to in the first month. First, Rob wanted Face measurementme to take a hydrochloric acid (HCl) test, which sounded pretty hard-core. According to Wikipedia, “hydrochloric acid is a solution of hydrogen chloride in water, that is a highly corrosive, strong mineral acid with many industrial uses.” Turns out, HCl is actually gastric acid, and helps us digest our food more completely, which allows us to get more nutrition out of it. Cool! Test results showed that sure enough, like most people, I didn’t have enough HCl naturally in my system, so Rob set me up with HCl supplements…

Please check back next week for the next installment!

Yoga to the Rescue!

Ahhhh- Fall is here! Late afternoon sunshine, brightly colored leaves lining the path, my favorite sweater, and …the FLU!!!!

I have heard so many people sniffling, sneezing, and saying “I’m just feeling a little run down”.  The locker room chatter includes home remedies, Emergen-C, and something called “Kick Ass Immune”!

Having two little ones, and a busy work schedule, I am also determined to get through this Flu season unscathed. My plan includes attending Pamela’s Yoga Workshop this weekend, which is all about how to use Yoga to “Strengthen and Balance” my immune system. When I caught Pamela in the club last week, she explained that “this class is great for anyone who needs a little more attention to taking really good care of themselves as we enter the colder season!”  Whoa! That’s me!!

Pamela said we will learn some “simple postures, breathing exercises, and daily health care maintenance”. She will also touch on the wisdom of better food choices that can help to boost your immune system. I’m all for learning some ways to increase my chances of staying healthy this fall.

Wishing you a sniffle-free transition to this beautiful season!

Many Smiles,

Gina

Discovering Your Fall Yoga Routine

As fall sets in, this is a great time to switch up your routine, and recharge your goals. Even the smallest changes to a regular yoga practice can have a profound impact.
If you already have a regular yoga practice, you might consider stepping outside you box and trying a new class or a different style of yoga.
If you’re like me and the summer somehow dismantled your regular routine, try scheduling in a different yoga class each week to inspire your practice.
And, if you are completely new to yoga, set a goal to try one or two classes this month, like Yoga Basics or Anusara Basics.
Another way to reinvigorate your practice is to explore different aspects of Yoga (philosophy, meditation, etc). There are several great books available and podcasts so you can deepen your practice wherever you are. Whatever path you choose, you will enhance your experience on and off the mat!

Yoga

Three weeks ago I had a member come up to me and state that he was “going to take a 6-week challenge”. He said he had selected 3 classes a week that were a mix of Hatha, Kundalini and Yoga-for-the-Athlete. (He said he chose that one becaGina Collinsuse it was one hour and early enough to get to work on time!) I complimented him on his choices and let him know I wished him well in his endeavor.

Yesterday he caught my attention and when I asked how it was going he said, amazing. He said it was challenging for the first two weeks but now looks forward to every opportunity “to take off his shoes, lay down his mat and get grounded”. He seemed somewhat calmer and energized in a good way. He said that most days his productivity at work is better and he feels less conflicted about decisions that need to be made.
WOW is all I could say. I hope his transformations continue and he will share directly with us soon!
Namaste

Weight Loss Success with the 8 Week Training Group

I found Dawna’s 8 Week Group Training to be incredibly successful!  I struggled a bit with the first two weeks… not because it was restrictive but because the frequency of meals and the amount of food I need to have on hand was so different than my pattern of behavior. Now, I can’t imagine going a day without a salad.

I reached my goal after 9 weeks on the menu plan. During those times I plateaued a bit (and you will plateau but hang in there!) Dawna reviewed my food diary and helped me identify ways to make a few adjustments in my food that would help me over the hump. With a just a few tweaks like switching to Uncle Sam cereal for the Snack Attack packs, replacing my low-fat mozzarella sticks with the non-fat kind, and using non-fat Half and Half I continued to see weight loss when I thought I was at the end of the road.

It’s really quite amazing how making even just one adjustment to a particular food item can make all the difference! I do hope others in the group see similar success. Good luck to all who are starting the next group…you will be happy you stuck with the program!

8 Week Group Training – Weight Loss Success

Hello All-

Dawna asked me to write a few words about my recent weight loss and fitness journey with her 8 Week Training Group. I started my program in January of this year and weighed in at 194.5. I’m sure there were days when I was 200, but that was my jumping off point.

The first two weeks were the most difficult. However, I was able to see pretty quick results. I tracked all my food on my phone using the LOSEIT app, I set timers and reminders, wrote it all down and tracked everything diligently. It was motivating and easy for me to see what was working and what wasn’t.

I eventually started back into the gym again. It was a slow start at first, just easy classes here and there when I could fit it into my schedule. As I started to see results I became more and more addicted.

I have lost a total of 36.5 pounds. I have gone from a size 12/14 (closer to stretching out of the 14) and I now am a solid 8 (I’m 5’9”). I actually wore a bikini this summer (I know, gasp!) I work out easily 5x’s a week. I Kickbox, Zumba, Step Aerobic, you name it. I feel like I can walk into any class and hold my own. Last month my gym was closed during the Hurricane (I live in Delaware) so I decided to take a run. I ran 3 miles my first time out, no stopping, no flat line. It felt great. I see people that I haven’t seen in months who are amazed at the change. I have motivated two of my friends to join me in this journey. One has lost over 25#’s to date.

Even after almost 10 months of this program, I still eat the healthy stuff as the first week. I mix things up more and have more freedom. But, food does not control me or my life anymore. And, I am a Chef, food is around me all the time. I know my triggers, what I can and cannot eat. It has been a very freeing and positive experience. And, to be honest, I could not have done it without the help of Dawna and her emails and encouragement.

PS my biggest complaint, and I say this all the time. I didn’t take any before and after pics. Take them, you won’t regret it.

Inspiration: Where does it come from?

It is interesting where inspiration comes from. I have spent years of my life racing, whether it has been triathlon or in the pool, on the track or on a bike, I love to compete and to race. The thing that has changed has been why I race. For many years I didn’t know why, and to be honest, this held me back. I had some success, but I never really tapped in to all that was available.

I have been a swim coach for more than half of my life and the head coach of RallySport Aquatics for Dane RACE Swimmerover 10 years. I’ve worked with National Champions, Olympic hopefuls and others who have gone on to be pro cyclists and triathletes. The dedication and commitment of these people is epic. But it is also understandable. The return for their work is something that we see as “worth it”. We say that we would do the 25 hour weeks and the 5:00 a.m.’s too if only we could see that return.

Over the past 3 seasons I have had the opportunity to coach a young man that has inspired many of us in a different way. Dane came to us an undersized 12 year old kid, who hadn’t had a ton of success in the sport, but he loved it. He trained hard, was the first to ask for help and he developed into a very good swimmer. He was still undersized and often this held him back from the times he wanted, but no one discounted his effort. Last Fall we were reminded of how determined he can really be.

From 50-250 (yards that is)

Golf AchieversAs many of you know, tackling golf fitness is not an easy task (but it is rewarding) some of you can attest to that – actually all of us can relate, myself included.

Several years ago I had an individual that was a ‘former athlete’ (according to them) come to me and ask if there was a way they could improve one aspect of their golf game. After consistent group training they started to show some promise. I think I saw it first. Within six months this person went from not being able to play the game at all to becoming a solid social golfer.

Their improvement translated into a love for the game and more competitive games not just locally but nationally with friends of all levels.

Way to go – you know who!
